I have the unfortunate luck to be getting an attack of the summer sniffles. This is only mildly tolerable due to the fact that I am barely finished with two of the three courses I had for summer quarter, and therefore have a lighter workload. It isn’t really all that tolerable at all, as I hate being sick (really sick) with a passion. Especially colds because they start the same and then end up as pneumonia or bronchitis or laryngitis which all sound like pretty things to say, but their realities are not nearly as fun as saying them.

I just finished a book– a real one, not a non-fiction account of what it is like to teach, as a white person, in an all minority inner city school where you are not being lauded as the great white hope but instead laughed at for thinking you can be something as silly as the great white hope. Reading it was refreshing. Unfortunately, the writer had a style of writing that was extremely verbose and kind of crawled around in my brain and nestled there so I am going to stop writing now, less I start to make sure that everything is “exquisitely annotated, and, where possible, provide staggering visual aids” (Pessl 11). And in MLA format, no less.

The book, Special Topics in Calamity Physics, was a very entertaining read. However, to whoever claimed that it was part travelogue– have you ever read a travelogue? A casual mentioning of “Rhoda Harris, Galways, Indianna” followed by “Nondescript Redhead, Our Town, USA” is not, nor will it ever be a travelogue. Sadly, yes this was why I picked the book up– also because the amazon blurb said something about being packed to the gills with pop-culture and literary references. I give it a smile, nod, and my patented “I liked it, it was good” pin.

–all I am working on is the knitted converse shoes and trying to figure out which yarn I will use for Giselle.

Grades are in– almost all of them!

For “What to do with a BA in English?” I received a CR, and since it was a CR/NC (credit no credit) course, I am thrilled.

For “How To Completely Mystify People You Know With Random Knowledge” otherwise knownt as “Critical Approaches to Literature” I got a B. Sheesh. I am, of course, thrilled right down to my pretty purple toes.

For “World Mythology” read “Greco-Roman Mythology” I also received a B, which I am very thankful for as this was the class that I somehow missed the most days of. It was also my favorite class.

The verdict is still out on the femminatzi version of Gender and Communications.

I have excellent news! Outside of school even– Moody is done! He is all sewn up with a dangly eye, brains oozing, marrow leeching, and intestines spilling forth from his putridly adorable body. All he needs now is a victim… (sadly, my duplicate stitching skills are somewhat lacking, so his chest does not display such a violent spray of arterial spatter this time around.)

That means that tomorrow morning, asap (otherwise known as once kiddo is off to school and I am actually awake) I cast on for my super(not)special project, which I am determined to finish by Christmas.

It’s a sweater.

And it’s for me.

AND ONLY ME! hahaha

Okay, so the other day, a friend was commenting on my monthly reading list and asked when I found the time to read. In the ensuing discussion, she described herself as a “goldilocks” when it comes to reading–she needs to have everything juuuuuust right to be able to focus. …

So, this is my question to you–are you a Goldilocks kind of reader?

I can read ANYWHERE– could i? would i? should i? LOL. Seriously though, I have read whilst walking, being in a car, being on a ‘train ride,’ in various lines at various amusement parks, on the toilet– you know you do too… I have a different book for each room of the house, current ‘page turner’ notwithstanding. I have books in my car, just in case I get stuck with nothing to read. Reading is like a high priced addiction for me. I could get the free smack from the library, but then I’d have to give it back… you know?

I have not read underwater… but I read whilst in labor– it was a true crime book on a woman who murdered her family, finished that and moved on to the Michael Chriton (sp?) book on an airplane crash… um… I have NOT read during sex though.

Awhile back as a BTT post I talked about the death of Mara Jade
AT THE HANDS OF HER NEPHEW, JACEN SOLO.

Let me tell you something, Harry Potter has nothing, nothing on Star Wars. I have waited in lines for hours, sat in the livingroom of my childhood home downloading trailers for hours upon hours (56k was supposed to be sooo fast back then), dressed up, cried, read, spent more time and love on the cast of characters from Star Wars than I will ever spend on Harry Potter and his band of friends (that’s not to say I don’t love them equally, but they aren’t FAMILY.) After all, Harry Potter has only been sharing his life with me for six years, from age 11 to 17. But I’ve been with the Skywalkers since ANAKIN was a child. We’re talking four generations, what with the birth of Alanna, Jacen’s daughter.

In 2000 I wept as Chewbacca died at the hands of a bizarre new kind of extragallactic alien race. In 2001? I cried as Anakin Solo died a hero’s death. While war raged(still rages) all around me in real life, I watch the same thing tear through the galaxy far far away. You could call me a die-hard star wars fan, except I kind of don’t like the prequel years…

I just finished Inferno. I can’t wait for the next to come out, but at the same time I don’t want to read it. It’s heartrending watching a character that I have watched grow up from pregnancy to his own child, over the course of more than a decade go down the path that he is going. Turning wholly to the dark, tearing his family apart. It makes me cry.

It really does make me cry.

Actually I am so full of sadness that the fire in me is completely out. The need to eulogize… gone. And really, I think I should just go read some candy coated romance novels, because after Monday, I’ll be wending my way through:

The Iliad
The Odessey (homer’s not joyce’s)
Sophocles
Ovid’s Metamorphoses
Hesiod

And that is just for my “World” Mythology class. And here I was hoping for I don’t know, more than just classical mythology? Like Norse mythology, African mythology… etc. But, I suppose I do need a foundation and blah blah blah, so I am really upset at all.

But who know what other stuff I will be reading.

Which brings me to this, gentle-ish readers (if you have continued reading through this post) Monday the 10th is a big day for me. (in my own head) I begin my journey to a Bachelor’s degree and hopefully on to a Master’s–that’s what I really want anyways. I had thought I had more time to consider this, but I have let my time just slip by.

So the question is, should I just add a category here, or move the chronicles of getting a BA in English to a whole other blog? Or does anyone really care?
