BTT: Decorum

Do you have “issues” with too much profanity or overly explicit (ahem) “romantic” scenes in books? Or do you take them in stride? Have issues like these ever caused you to close a book? Or do you go looking for more exactly like them? (grin)

I don’t mind profanity or obscenity. I don’t love it, but I am not in general too much bothered by them.

HOWEVER

I was just reading a romance novel, a regular, nonshelved with the erotic fiction, romance novel. And suddenly in the middle of the nice normal, semi erotic sex scene the male lead is suddenly telling the female lead that he is going to shove his cock into her cunt. My eyes just about bugged out of my head. I am the last person to censure something like this– it is, after all, my bread and butter. But DAMN that just up and came outta nowhere.

And in another one all the sudden the villain, a man, was in a bisexual hardcore domination scene involving spanking, and then buggery with a fruit. (Nerds Like It Hot)

Some of it is drivel, which makes my job harder… so painful. Some of it is laughable. Occassionally it’s readable.

Next on my list? Manaconda.

Because HOW COULD YOU RESIST A COVER LIKE THAT?

For those of you who are tempted….

Dorothy “Dot” Araiza is a sex-toy maker by trade. One would think she has an active social life, but on the contrary, her existence is a rather boring, staid one. Dot dreams of finding her happily-ever-after, of being swept off her feet by Prince Charming - not to mention getting laid after eight pathetic years! A lightning storm later, all Dot’s fevered fantasies will come true.

But Prince Charming isn’t quite what she’d been expecting…

ohhhh yeah. dude. If I made sex toys, and this may be TMI, but I would be quite happy. I mean, I’d be able to afford one of those pneumatic machines where there’s a piston and an engine and a rod and a whoozamajiggit

*spaced out*

I’m sorry, I got lost for a moment. But seriously, I think that alot of the sex in romance novels has become trite garbage. It’s actually a relief to pick up something like Julia Quinn and read a virgin sex scene because they’ve been out of style for years. I’m kinda experienced myself and I look like a prudish housefrau compared to some of the heroines I have read of late. I only wish women were as sexually exploratory as the women in these books– I’d have a lot less sad, lonely husbands calling me.

I agree with you that some romance novels have more “hotter” scenes than before, but as long as they are done tastefully (unlike erotica), I think they are fine with me. And I’m totally with you about reading Julia Quinn’s books alike because they are such a rare these days, hehe.

    Happy BTT!

After awhile, too much just plain sex becomes very ho-hum… LOL.

Mills and Boons used to have a lot of virgin sex. Nowadays, it is very rare.
